Pursuant to New York Village Law §7-722, the Village Board has the authority and responsibility to undertake comprehensive planning and to regulate land use for the purpose of protecting the public health, safety, and general welfare of its citizens. The current Village Masterplan was created in the early 1990s and implemented by the Village Board in 1993. One of the provisions of the plan was a periodic update. In 2013, the Village Board determined that it was the appropriate time to perform an update.

The Village Board wished to remain true to the intent of the current Masterplan having been developed by a diverse group of Village residents as the “People’s Vision.” And so, a committee of nine Village residents was appointed by the Village Board to perform the update. The committee’s charge was:

1. To review the 1993 Village Masterplan;
2. To collect data to inform an update of the Masterplan;
3. To revise and update the Master plan as necessary to accommodate the updated data; and
4. To submit a draft revised Master Plan to the Village Board

The Village Board gave the Committee up to three years to complete its charge. Trustee Forte served as the liaison between the Committee and the Village Board.

The Masterplan Update Committee held more than 50 public meetings and hearings as well as fielding a survey of the Village and interviews with individual residents, property owners, and business owners over the course of three years in order to gather and compile the information contained in the new masterplan.

On September 14, 2016, the Village Board of Trustees unanimously adopted the Village Masterplan developed by the Committee.
